2-Day Indonesia Tourism Guide: Mount Bromo and Ijen Crater

Indonesia is home to some of the most breathtaking natural landscapes in the world, and perhaps two of the most iconic sites in East Java are Mount Bromo and Ijen Crater. If you're planning a quick escape from Surabaya or Malang, this 2-day itinerary will ensure you maximize your adventure while immersing yourself in the stunning beauty of these volcanic wonders.

Day 1: Morning: Journey to Mount Bromo

Begin your journey early in the morning as you depart from either Surabaya or Malang. The travel time is approximately 3-4 hours depending on your departure point and traffic. It's best to leave around 3 AM to reach Bromo's viewpoint in time for sunrise. Be sure to pack some warm clothing, as temperatures can drop significantly in the early morning. 

Sunrise Views at Penanjakan

Upon arrival, head to the viewpoint at Penanjakan (2,770 meters above sea level). This location offers a stunning panorama of the sunrise illuminating the volcanoes and surrounding landscapes. Standing amidst fellow travelers, watch as the sky shifts from night to day, with fiery reds and oranges contrasting against the silhouette of Mount Bromo and the majestic Mount Semeru. 

Exploring the Bromo Caldera

After the sun rises, return to your vehicle and descend into the Bromo Caldera. The vast sea of sand offers an otherworldly experience, where you can hike or take a horse ride to the base of Mount Bromo itself. Take a moment to appreciate the sulfur smoke wafting from the crater and the unique geological formations surrounding you. 

Afternoon: Travel to Ijen 

After exploring Mount Bromo, it's time to embark on the next leg of your journey. Drive for approximately 5-6 hours to Ijen Crater. Upon arrival, check into a local guesthouse or lodge to unwind before your evening adventure. Many accommodations offer stunning views and a chance to experience local cuisine, so don’t miss out on trying a traditional meal.

Day 2: Early Morning: Ijen Crater Trekking

Prepare for an early start as the trek to Ijen Crater begins around 1 AM. Guided tours are available, which is highly recommended for safety and to maximize your experience. The hike takes approximately 1.5 to 2 hours depending on your pace and fitness level. As you ascend, the darkness envelops you, and the stars twinkle overhead. The highlight of this trek is witnessing the mesmerizing blue flames that burn at the sulfur mine—this phenomenon is best seen in the early hours before sunrise.

At the crater rim, you will catch sight of the stunning turquoise acid lake. Take your time here to appreciate the natural beauty and capture photographs of both the lake and the incredible blue flames below.
